The Cake Walk

Alternate names for this dance are - The Chalk Line Walk and the Walk Around.

Some of the features of this dance are the Bending back of the body and the Dropping of the hands, at the wrists .

Prancing steps were the main steps of this dance.
It originated in'Florida' and came about because the African slaves would mimic the mannerisms of the people in the "Big House" dancing Ballroom - but they would exagerate the moves.

The Cakewalk faded out in the 1920's, however you can still see some aspects of it in newer dances like the Lindy hop.
