Ragtime - The most famous composer of this type of music was - Scott Joplin .

The main characteristic of this music is it's ragged rhythm.

It commenced as dance music in the 'red light district' of St Louis and New Orleans.

The early steps and movements of this style came from the black community.

It consisted of shaking the shoulders, stomping, wiggling and close/tight embraces.

Scot Joplin had a string of hits related to this type of dance from about 1899 onwards.

One of the most famous being - "Maple Leaf Rag".

Jazz sort of took over from this style about 1917 - but over the years the music has been re-discovered and there have been numerous revivals.

Many Jazz bands decided to include this rype of music in their repertoire.

above A ONE STEP VARIATION OF THIS STYLE OF DANCE

The film - The Sting had a soundtrack of Joplins' music and brought this style of dance to the fore again.
